The Canary Islands, known for their stunning natural beauty and exceptional climate, are home to multiple grape varieties, some of which cannot be found elsewhere in Spain.
Driven by our passion for the region's winemaking tradition and always with an ecological focus, at Bodegas Ferrera, we cultivate a wide variety of grapes that give life to unique white, rosé, and red wines.
Explore with us the different grape varieties grown on our estate and their characteristics.
White Wines
Listán Blanco de Canarias:
Listán Blanco is an indigenous variety from the Canary Islands cultivated on the slopes of the Güímar Valley. It thrives best when grown at altitudes above 600 meters. This grape is known for its fruity taste and refreshing acidity.
Wines made from Listán Blanco usually exhibit citrus and floral notes with a mineral touch, reflecting the influence of Tenerife's volcanic soil. Some of the bottles we produce with Listán Blanco include organic white wine, dry white wine, and fruity white wine.
Malvasía Aromática:
Malvasía Aromática, as the name suggests, is characterized by its intense aromas. Though its origins lie in Greece, it is now found throughout the Mediterranean, Madeira, and the Canary Islands.
This variety imparts a floral fragrance and tropical fruit notes to the resulting wines, such as our Momentos Malvasía. It's perfect for white wine enthusiasts seeking a balance between freshness and complexity.
Albillo Criollo:
Albillo Criollo is another indigenous variety from the Canary Islands that we cultivate at Bodegas Ferrera. This grape contributes bright acidity and subtle fruity and floral notes to white wines. It also adds depth and elegance to the winery's whites, such as the albillo criollo or our classic dry white.
Rosé Wines
Listán Negro:
Although more commonly known for its white varieties, Listán Negro is also used to produce red and rosé wines. The latter stand out for their deep pink color, fruity flavor with red fruit notes, and balanced acidity.
Listán Negro can be tasted in our dry rosé wine and our fruity rosé wine.
Red Wines
Tempranillo:
Tempranillo is extensively grown throughout Spain to produce full-bodied red wines. Although characteristic of the Rioja D.O., it is also cultivated in the Canary Islands. Its name is due to its early ripening, several weeks before most Spanish red grape varieties.
Despite not being native to the Canary Islands, it has remarkably adapted to Tenerife's climate and soil. It brings notes of red fruits, vanilla, and oak to Bodegas Ferrera's red wines, creating smooth and balanced wines like the organic red, atlanticum, or our legendary red.
Syrah:
Syrah, an international red grape, has become an exciting component of Bodegas Ferrera's red wine range. It brings notes of black fruits, spices, and pepper, contributing to the complexity and structure of our Momentos Crianza wine.
The Influence of Terroir at Bodegas Ferrera
One of the most distinctive features of Bodegas Ferrera's wines is the influence of the natural and geographical environment in which the grapes are cultivated. The Güímar Valley offers unique microclimates and volcanic soils that influence the character of the grapes and, ultimately, the wine's flavor.
The volcanic soil imparts minerality to the wines, translating into earthy and saline notes. Additionally, the region's subtropical climate, with mild winters and warm summers, allows for a slow and balanced grape maturation, reflected in the wines' freshness and acidity.
The altitude of the vineyards in the Güímar Valley also plays a fundamental role in grape quality. The steep slopes and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean provide a maritime influence that helps maintain a constant temperature in the vineyards, essential for grape development.
Commitment to Organic Viticulture
Bodegas Ferrera has embraced organic viticulture as a fundamental pillar of its philosophy. Growing grapes in harmony with nature is a priority for the winery, which works towards preserving the environment and sustainability. Respect for the environment is reflected in the quality of its wines, a testament to the region's richness and biodiversity.
Organic viticulture involves practices such as the elimination of synthetic chemicals, promoting biodiversity in vineyards, and sustainable management of water resources. These practices not only benefit the land and grapes but also result in healthier and more authentic wines.
